News from the lab

Attendance at ESCAIDE 2025 Warsaw 18-21 November 2025
I attended ESCAIDE 2025 in Warsaw, a key European meeting on infectious disease surveillance and public health. The conference provided an excellent platform to exchange knowledge, engage with leading experts, and explore emerging trends in epidemiology.

19.11. 25 Our bioRxiv preprint is now live.
We looked at how key SARS-CoV-2 variant waves interact with human nasal cells, where infection begins. Using multiple “omics” approaches, we found that each variant reshapes immune and metabolic responses in different ways. Omicron seems to strike a balance: it still replicates efficiently but triggers a more restrained antiviral and metabolic reaction. This may help explain its high transmissibility and generally reduced severity.
The study was a collaboration between our lab at University of Essex, Wendy Barclay’s group at Imperial College London, Charalampos (Babis) Rallis group at Queen Mary University of London and the Markus Ralser group at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

17.11.25 New paper from our Dongsheng Luo to has been released in Virologica Sinica: Genomic characterization of three unclassified rhabdoviruses from mosquitoes in Malaysia and Central Africa.

01.07.2025: Our Safe Humans, Safe Bats initiative is making waves!
Our recent symposium in Abuja brought together scientists, students, policymakers and public health experts and caught the attention of national Nigerian media.
Watch the TVC News coverage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBcXWFM2MYc
Together with local partners, we’re working to raise awareness, reduce risky contact with bats, and promote conservation through education and research.
Learn more: www.safehumanssafebats.org
Thank you to all who helped make this event a success. Onward - across Nigeria and beyond.

25.06.2025: Symposium of the Safe Humans Safe Bats was a huge success
Grateful to everyone who joined us in Abuja for the Safe Humans, Safe Bats symposium, a collaborative effort to protect public health and biodiversity in Nigeria. Watch the full symposium here: https://www.youtube.com/live/ZJeb_GxGtTA
Over 250 people attended online and in person, with support from the Nigerian Ministry of Health, researchers, and community leaders. We had rich conversations about reducing zoonotic disease risk while promoting conservation.
Special thanks to all our partners (SMACON, JOSTUM, WAR AGAINST RABIES, UK Bat Conservation Trust, University of Abuja and University of Essex) and to the Nigerian Health Ministry media teams who helped document this milestone.
The highlight was being named a prince of the Tiv tribe and wearing the traditional outfit: what an honour!!!

24.06.2025: Visit to the Nigerian Ministry of Livestock Development
As part of the Safe Humans, Safe Bats initiative, we had the honour of meeting with Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Nigeria.
Our discussion focused on how bat conservation intersects with livestock health, rural livelihoods, and national development goals. The Minister expressed strong interest in integrating bat-related research and disease surveillance with broader livestock and public health strategies.
We're grateful for the Minister’s warm welcome and support. Collaborating with national leadership is critical to ensuring our efforts are impactful, sustainable, and aligned with Nigeria's long-term vision. This meeting strengthens our resolve to expand the initiative nationwide and foster meaningful science-policy partnerships.
Many thanks to the Ministry and its staff for their hospitality and shared commitment to One Health.

23.06.2025: Visiting the National Parks Service of Nigeria in Abuja
As part of the Safe Humans, Safe Bats initiative, our team had the privilege of visiting the National Parks Service of Nigeria in Abuja to foster collaboration and build long-term partnerships for conservation and public health.
We had a productive meeting with the Conservator-General and senior leadership of the Service, where we discussed the importance of safeguarding bat habitats and preventing spillover events through education, ecological monitoring, and joint action.
The National Parks Service plays a vital role in protecting Nigeria’s biodiversity, and we are grateful for their warm reception and openness to supporting science-driven, community-based initiatives.
Together, we aim to promote a One Health approach that benefits both people and ecosystems.

17.06.2025: Viral Pseudotype Unit
Great to take part in the Viral Pseudotype Unit (VPU) Annual Meeting at the University of Sussex — a fantastic platform bringing together researchers working on pseudotype technologies across virology, vaccines, and diagnostics. Thanks to the organisers for a stimulating day and to all colleagues for the great discussions and ideas shared. Looking forward to what comes next!

13.06. 2025 Outreach activities in Schools of Makurdi Nigeria by the Safe Humans Safe Bats Initiative
As part of the Safe Humans, Safe Bats initiative, we carried out inspiring outreach activities in schools across Makurdi, Nigeria: engaging students, teachers, and local communities on bat conservation, public health, and the importance of coexisting safely with wildlife.
Huge thanks to the dedicated local teams, faculty members, and volunteers who made this possible. It’s been incredible to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students, a reminder that education is the first step towards meaningful change.

Welcome Dr. Dongsheng Luo!
We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Dongsheng Luo to our lab at the University of Essex as an MRC NIRG-funded postdoc. Dongsheng brings rich experience from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Institut Pasteur, and LSHTM, with a focus on virus evolution, zoonoses, and virus-host interactions. His work will focus on decoding the mild pathobiology of common cold coronaviruses to identify pan-coronavirus antiviral targets.
Welcome aboard, Dongsheng!
